What do you need for 140W USB-C charging?

140W moves beyond the old 100W USB PD ceiling and relies on USB PD 3.1 Extended Power Range, so every link in the path needs to support the required high-power mode.

140W uses USB PD 3.1 EPR

USB-IF lists a 28V fixed-voltage level for power up to 140W. A charger with 140W printed on it must still negotiate an EPR-capable profile with a compatible device before that power can be used.

Use an EPR-capable high-power cable

Current USB-IF USB-C to USB-C power markings use 240W for the high-power cable category. A legacy 60W cable cannot carry a 140W path, and an older 100W cable is not sufficient for EPR above 100W.

The device must support the higher profile

A 65W laptop on a 140W charger still requests only a supported lower-power profile. The larger source does not force excess wattage into the device.

Multi-port sharing can pull the port below 140W

Many 140W multi-port chargers can provide their headline output only from one specific port or only while other ports are lightly loaded. Check the manufacturer’s allocation table.

Does every USB-C port on a 140W charger output 140W?

No. Per-port limits and multi-port sharing rules vary by charger and can be much lower than the total printed rating.
