Charger size guide

What does a 100W USB-C charger really deliver?

100W is enough for many higher-power USB-C laptops, but the selected port, cable, shared loads and device profile can each reduce what actually arrives.

100W was the classic USB PD ceiling

Before USB PD 3.1 extended the standard to 240W, 100W was the familiar high-power ceiling. Many laptops, docks and older e-marked 5A cables are still designed around this level.

Use a proper 5A cable above 60W

A 60W cable cannot carry a full 100W USB-C PD path. For power above 60W you need an appropriate electronically marked 5A cable. Current USB-IF certification uses 240W marking for the high-power cable category, while older 100W-marked cables remain common.

A 100W brick may have only one 100W port

Multi-port chargers often advertise the sum of all outputs. One port may reach 100W only when used alone, then drop when another phone, tablet or laptop is attached.

The device can still be the limit

If a laptop targets 65W, connecting it to a 100W source does not make it consume 100W. USB PD negotiates a supported profile and the device controls what it requests.

Standards reference

USB Power Delivery supports negotiated power levels up to 240W. See USB-IF — USB Power Delivery ↗ and USB-IF — Cables and Connectors ↗.

Always check the device and charger's own documentation. Printed wattage is a ceiling, not a promise that every port or device will use that power.

FAQ

Does a 100W charger need a special cable?

For a full 100W path, use an appropriate 5A e-marked USB-C cable. A 60W cable will cap the path at 60W.

Is 100W EPR?

100W is within the pre-EPR USB PD power range. EPR adds higher fixed-voltage levels for power above 100W.

Why does my 100W charger give my laptop 65W?

The laptop, selected port, cable or power-sharing mode may be the lower ceiling. The 100W label is only the charger’s available maximum under specified conditions.
